Helping Students Achieve Their Dreams... Jennifer Lester BensonWhat do you want to be when you grow up? The road to answering this question has been one of many twists and turns for me. It has been what I like to call a “process of elimination.” This is largely due to the fact that my interests have been so varied, and I do have a tendency to get bored if what I’m doing becomes too stagnant. This “process” has afforded me some wonderful opportunities where I have gained experience in theatre, television, film, and the newspaper industry. However, it wasn’t until I entered graduate school that I discovered I love to teach! When it comes to teaching, I believe that different students learn in different ways, and it is my job to help every student learn regardless of their learning style. Therefore, I strive to find ways to make my course material accessible to all students. Whether the student is taking a class only because it is a requirement or because it is their major interest, I love to help them discover the relevance of the subject in relation to their daily lives, and develop a respect for what it takes to produce and perform in these areas with excellence. I also believe that it is my job to help students develop their critical thinking skills and question the world around them. They should not take things at face value, especially if they are to become ethical professionals. My ultimate goal is to help my students dream big and reach for their potential by giving them the tools they will need to compete and be successful in their chosen field while understanding their responsibility to conduct themselves and their jobs with integrity. |
